Aerospace

Using the STR system adds up to reduced inspection times and increased productivity.

•Faster inspections: The machine operates at a greater inspection speed and with a larger envelope of opportunity than other machines. This allows more parts to be simultaneously set up for a batch scan process. Previously, only one part at a time could be setup in other machines.

•Fewer machines, and associated capital and maintenance costs. The robotic system allows parts to be inspected by fewer machines, reducing the capital investments and maintenance associated with more machines.

•Reduced number of scans: Larger parts can be inspected in one scan, as opposed to segmented scans requiring multiple setups.

•Increased flexibility: A larger variety of parts can be inspected on one machine. Previously, separate machines were required for different parts. In addition, other tools can be added to the HydraStar system to provide additional flexibility.

•Faster machine delivery time utilizing the robotic platform as opposed to custom designed and fabricated components.

•Cost-effective programming utilizing the robotic system as the drive platform with a primary and follower system.

•Capability to expand the programming parameters to include complex parts

Oil & Gas

The operational benefits associated with the new computed radiography inspection regime included:

•Shorter exposure times and higher efficiency, leading to more inspections per shift and less downtime.

•Fewer retakes because of the wide dynamic range and high signal-noise ratio of the CRXFlex system, 

which allows a broad range of thicknesses to be inspected in a single exposure.

•The ability to use hard or soft flexible cassettes, providing versatility and allowing simultaneous 

scanning of smaller plates, greatly reducing inspection times.

•Extremely sharp images through the application of GE’s Flash! Filters, which offer one-click access to 

objective data interpretation, leading to earlier and increased probability of detection.

•The ability to review, report archive and share inspection data through GE’s Rhythm software, allowing 

rapid and/or remote comparison of data from previous inspections.

•The space-saving afforded by the table-top CRXFlex scanner.

•The elimination of costs associated with consumable and chemical waste disposal, setting up darkrooms 

and film storage associated with conventional film radiography.

The plant has experienced the following benefits as a result of this modern control system upgrade project:

•Greater data availability through improved hardware and software Toolbox functionality

Other

•Reduced costs. the remote location of the port made sourcing and storing large drive components difficult and 

costly. the deployment of the condition monitoring program enabled the port personnel to plan for repairs and 

equipment needs. 

•Increased reliability and less downtime. the condition monitoring program deployed at Port Otago drove asset 

optimization and allowed for condition-based maintenance.

•Real-time information. Behavior changes in assets are delivered via email and text—providing easily accessible, 

real-time communication 

•Dataidentifies trends and changes in drive condition over time and unusual spikes from changing failure mode 

behaviors that are not always known
